Best Sites to Book Your Stay + I'm Off to Japan ✈️

Happy Thursday!

I'm leaving super early tomorrow to fly to Japan! I can't wait, as I've heard nothing but good things about the country... and it's my 30th country!

I'll be exploring Tokyo for a few days before my friends fly in and we spend two weeks touring the country with EF Ultimate Break. (PS - they have a sale with up to 20% off trips until TONIGHT!)

In a few days, I'll start sharing stories on Instagram and Facebook, so make sure you're following me to see everything Japan :)

I also finished my full review of my Sicily and Malta trip, which was also with EF Ultimate Break. Make sure you check it our for everything I loved about the trip, and what I hope they improve.

Last week, I went over what to look for when searching for hotels and home rentals to have the best possible stay.

Now, I want to talk about the different websites you can use to book your stay — and how to choose the best one for your trip.

There are a lot of options out there, and each one works a little differently. Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common booking sites and when I use them:

  • Booking.com: Great for hotels, apartments, and even guesthouses. They often have free cancellation, loyalty discounts, and lots of filters to narrow down your search. I use this site the most when booking hotels or apartments in cities.
  • Hotels.com: Also hotel-focused, with a simple loyalty program that gives you one free night after every ten nights booked. It’s easy to use and a good option if you tend to stay in chain hotels.
  • VRBO: Good for vacation rentals, especially if you're traveling with a group or want an entire house. Similar to Airbnb but usually used more for longer stays or family/group trips. There are fewer listings, but fewer fees too.
  • Hostelworld: The best place to search for hostels. You can filter by rating, location, and room type (dorm vs. private). Great for solo travelers or budget trips.
  • Direct Booking: Sometimes it’s worth checking the hotel or property’s own website. You may find a better price, a free upgrade, or extra perks for booking direct.

A Few Tips:

  • Always read the cancellation policy and total price with taxes and fees.
  • Compare across 2–3 sites before booking.
  • Use filters to help narrow it down (location, amenities, reviews).

Choosing the right site depends on your travel style, group size, and what kind of stay you're looking for. A little comparison can go a long way.

As always, you can reply to this email if you want to chat accommodations or anything else travel!

Have a great weekend :)

Sarah

PS: My next email will be in three weeks on June 12 - I'll be busy enjoying Japan 😉

Travel Insurance

One of the things I get asked about the most is travel insurance. Should you get it, and if so, which one?

YES, you should have travel insurance, as you never know when things may go wrong. SafetyWing is my go-to for travel insurance because it covers so much, is easy to purchase for days or months, and is affordable.

Many credit cards also include travel insurance. Personally, I get SafetyWing on top of my credit card insurance.
